Should i give my guinea pigs oranges every day2007-11-24 22:15:02

i know that they can't make vitamin c on their own and you have to suppliment it in their water and food and such, but is it ok to give them pieces of orange every day?

Answers:

DO NOT put vitamin drops in their water (this is NOT needed and causes the guinea pig to drink less, due to the horrible taste). It is only sold by petshops because they want to make money on the fact that guinea pigs need to be supplied with Vitamin C. They get enough Vit C from their fruit, vegetables, hay and dry feed - that's all they need it from.

It is OK to give orange everyday but ONLY ONE slice - too much it bad for them. Vegetables I find more popular than fruit anyway - most fruits are very acidy (which causes mouth sores).

Some of mine turn their noses up straight away when they smell the oranges anyway so it certainly isn't an important fruit for them. Misty loves them though! They pull funny faces when they eat orange and they enjoy licking their chins after where all the juice has dripped.

the experts recommend that they get vitamin c every day. but not to put it in their water. i do not put it in the water of my two guinea pigs. i just give them the food with the vitamin c in it and every other day an orange slice for them to chew on.

I would stick to every other day - oranges are very high in citrus, and too many may begin to upset your pig's stomach. Although, it is very important to provide guinea pigs with Vitamin C everyday. Other foods, besides oranges, that contain high levels of vitamin C include kale, collard greens, Romain lettuce, bell pepper, broccoli... etc.

I think you should mix it up a little. First buy food that contains viamin c. and yes use the water and food supplements as well. Giving them an orange every day is okay but maybe just give it to them every other day (maybe on the in between days give them lettuce or cabbage, My Guinea Pigs especially like grapes/strawberries
