Somethings wrong with my gerbils eye
Ok, so when one of my gerbils' wakes up, one of its eyes doesn't want to open, so I sometimes kinda open it for them, and it continues to stay open until it goes back to sleep. I don't have enough money to go to the vet, so I was hoping that I might find some answers and solutions to this problem on the internet. I've had no such luck, so if anyone with any experience can give me some advice, or if someone can find a site that can help me, that would be great! Thank you so much!
Answers:I keep gerbils too, sometimes one of my gerbils eyes gets a little sticky. He cant open it, and I think that its the sawdust that I use that irritates his eye.
All I do is a couple of times a day I use cool boiled water with a tiny pich of salt and bathe his eye gently with a cotton bud. That clears it for my gerbil, I hope it does the same for yours.
If it doesnt clear up you really should take it to the vet, you dont want to risk the poor thing losing its eye.
my hamsters eye was like that but by the time i notcied it was too late. the vet told me it was probably an infection and she died from it. maybe u should put a little bit of neosporen on it, or you can call a vet, tell them your situation and im sure they'll give you some advice.
This has happened to my hamster numerous times. What you want to do is take a warm washcloth and gently rub his eye. Keep doing that everyday until his eye gets better. If a gerbil/ hamster has recurring problems with runny or sticky eyes or the eye appears cloudy the gerbil/ hamster could have an eye infection. This can be treated by mixing half a cup of sterile (boiled and cooled) water with a teaspoon of boric acid powder (available from a chemist or pharmacy) and using an eye dropper to bathe the eye twice or three times a day. If the hamster does not show improvement within a couple of days veterinary advice should be sought as antibiotics may help. Alot of gerbils/ hamsters get "sticky eyes" as a result of a cold/flu or dehydration.
