Somethings wrong with my guinea pig2007-11-24 22:15:06

When I picked my guinea pig up, I held her for about 20 minutes with breaks. My shirt was all wet! She didnt pee on me, but I think she was drooling. Are her teeth too long or is it something more serious? If her teeth are too long, are there any other options other than going to the vet? And does anyone have any nail trimming tips for her? Shes a year old and shes never had her nails cut...

If she was drooling on you to the extent that you noticed a big wet patch you seriously need to get your piggies teeth checked out! Either go to a vet and get them clipped or if they aren't that bad then just get her some hard chew toys like bark but NOT PINE because pine oil is toxic to guinea pigs. If her teeth are very bad she won't be able to eat properly and will get very ill so take her to a vet and get her seen quick! Take a look at the picture on the link below for how long a piggies teeth should be. And about the nails, you need to get them cut urgently too because my pigs are about 1 year old or a little less and they have needed to have their nails cut 5 times already! If you are cutting their nails then keep some styptic powder beside you so that if you cut into the quick of the nail (the bit where the blood is) then you can dip the nail into the powder and stop the bleeding quickly.

You should take her to the vet as soon as you can. Tooth problems can get very serious in guinea pigs - if their teeth are too long it can make it difficult for them to eat. There are no other options, really - the vet may have to trim your piggy's teeth. While there, the vet can show you how to trim her nails, too.

most likely she actually did pee on you, if you think her teeth are overgrown give her something(an old branch with crunchy bark works well) if she won't cooperate for nail trimming then you can have your vet do it for you
