Somethings wrong with my hamster Help2007-11-24 22:15:06

My hamster escaped for three days and we found him and he stayed in his cage for a day and then got out again for another three days. My brother found him at 4 o clock this morning and he was breathing very hard. When he got in his cage he rank water for about an hour, and started to run on his wheel, drinking water every 10 minutes. When I saw him about 9 o clock this morning, his fur was stringy by his neck, and he looked very tired. I gave him a big chunk of lettuce and some oats, and he ate them. he seems very sick. he wouldn't take a bath in this special sand I got him, he just looks at it. he lokks terrible right now. He isn't eating a whole lot, so i am worried.

Answers:

do you have any other pets? maybe he was afraid of something while roaming your house! It seems like he might just have some stress. Let him relax and don't let him get out of his cage! If he is still like this in a few days...you might want to bring him to a vet?

take him to the vet, he mite be sick from something he did outside his cage. like he might of eaten something he shouldnt have.
I know this sounds terrible, but how much does a hamster cost? $5?

Just get a new one.

Trust me, this happened with my rabbit.

It's pregnant.

Did you try hamster CPR? Take better care of your animals and keep them in their cage.
No one can really answer this question except for a vet. Do you have a vet in your area that specializes in small mammals? You should take your hamster in just to make sure he's ok. He sounds like he was dehydrated.
Oh I wish I knew a little more about hamsters but here are some logical guesses. My first intuition is that is he sort of in shock right now. He was just out exploring the great big world, lol! I would try to put him in a quiet dark place like a closet and let him have some time to hiself to calm down. Secondly, he might be bored, have you thought of getting him a cage buddy?? Also, is his cage to small, is he at a loss for things to keep him busy...those are things you can think of. Maybe try getting him one of those balls he can get in and roam the house in. Good luck, if everything else fails, take him to the vet... :)
He's probably in love and trying to impress his new mate by looking fit and trim and that's why he's watching his diet too. Love can do strange things!
might want to take him to the vet.and my hamster escaped for a while once and she did it a couple times i think ??? well any ways u should get a glass tank i have one and it works! make sure u have a tube thingy ny hamster loves it there.hope i helped!! just relax a lil to..Good luck!
possibly Wet Tail Disease.
vet he must of eaten something while on the loose, get a latch for the cage door, i did no more escapes, and to the person who said her hammies pregnant? it's a boy!! no preggers there.
Check his/her stool.Lettuce is a major cause of wet tail in rhodents,if the stool is runny, take it to the vet.

Good luck.

And don`t worry, hamsters are great escape artists,so don`t listen to the buttheads who are tryin to blame you for his/her escape
