Split tanks

one of my gerbils recently lost his brother to a cold, he now has it but we are treating it. i wanted to get him a friend once he gets better, but i have a few questions about the split tank method in order to introduce them:
do i have to buy a new tank to do this?
how do i get all the parts and put it together?
what's the easiest way of doing this?
