Steps to bond with my rat2007-11-24 22:15:08

What are some steps I can take that will make my rat more sociable. It's still a little baby.

Answers:

Handle him/her, feed him/her treats, mainly small pieces of fruit and veg. Avoid feeding him any meat until he/she's used to you, else he could nip you by accident. Also if he/she licks or gently nibbles you, don't pull away unless he hurts. Rats often use their teeth to investigate new things, and to clean themselves and each other, so he/she probably doesn't mean to hurt you.

Be gentle, try to be calm. Also use his/her name a LOT while talking to him, he/she'll learn to know it. My rat also knows NO, due to his michieveous nature. :)

Mainly, have fun, you just got a very fun pet!

Also, rats rarely jump, they don't like jumping far. They'll only (usually) jump if scared or in pain. However they will climb and explore wherever they can, so keep the door shut, just in case he gets on the floor. Your rat may dig his claws into you as a baby, this is simply if he/she thinks they're going to fall, stay still and put a hand to support your baby, and it'll relax soon enough. Your rat will also wrap his/her tail around you for balance, and most likely want to sit on your shoulder over 50% of the time, which is handy as you can still talk on the phone, clean his/her cage and such with him/her there. :)

At 452: Their tails are made of skin, and covered with very fine hairs. They're not creepy.
