Stinky hamster
I clean the cage every week like I am supposed to. The cage smells terrible and now my hamster is starting to smell worse. I have read that you are not supposed to give them a bath because they groom themselves. Did my hamster stop grooming himself? I am worried and do not know what to do.
Answers:it's alright...i have a hamster named Furby.
Furby cleans himself all the time and thats the problem. he eats stuff that eventually smells, and sometimes he eats his bedding. So when he licks himself, it smells. So, i bought him the nontoxic cleancritter-wipes that you can get at petsmart for like three dollars. just swipe him with them twice a week and he'll smell pretty good...if he licks himself, it's okay. Also, if you want his fur to be not as stringy and messy, then brush him witht he brushes that are for guinea pigs, rabbits, and ferrets. They said u can use these brushes for hamsters as well no matter what kind of hamster. anyway, hoped i helped and if you need more information contact me at my email!
Well if you clean the cage once a week you might want to try twice a week or you can buy this spray on shampoo at the petstore but i wouldn't do that even though the pet store does it sometimes! You can buy chinchilla sand and put it in you hamsters cage and he/she will roll in it and after 10 minutes of it being in the cage you can take it out again and that should help!
They make a product that you can put into the hamsters water that after about a week or two will reduce the smell of your hamsters waste dramatically. It is pretty expensive but I have read reviews on it and most of those people say it really works well. You can get it at petsmart for 12.49 for an 8 oz bottle.
I'm a veterinarian and an animal psychologist and i professionally think that ur hamster stopped grooming himself because he fells a strong need for attention or he needs more exercise.
Maybe u can pinch your nose and u won find the little guy smelly.. hee.
