Strange guinea pig behavior

Strange guinea pig behavior2007-11-24 22:15:09

i have 2 female guinea pigs & here lately they've been acting very strange.

one is a little larger than the other one and she'll start making a cooing sound (the closest comparison i can come up with is the sound a piegon makes) and backs up and sways her back end against the other one.

they also chase each other making that cooing noise.

the little one makes small squeaking noises at it, it seems like she's fussing at the larger one.

if need be, i can make a video of them because they do it quite a bit.

someone please help, i like them a lot and i don't wanna have to get rid of either one, but we can't really afford to buy a whole new cage... =-/

I have 3 female guinea pigs and one of them, Swirly, (named for the white swirl on her head) will do this quite often. I know exactly the behavior that you are talking about, and I think that I may be able to help you. Just bear with me through my little story, there is a point! lol!

We rescued Manchita (another one of my piggies) and Swirly, and we were told that the two girls were cousins. We had the two in a small petstore cage. What was not known was that Manchita came to us pregnant. She had 3 beautiful baby piggies, and we kept the only girl and named her Chippy (short for Chocolate Chip). As the babies were growing up, Swirly would get very agitated and upset, and she would do this behavior that you mentioned. She also nipped at the babies, so my sister and I started looking for larger cages on the internet. We thought that if Swirly had more personal space and wasn't so cramped, she would be better with the babies. We came to an amazing website that I highly reccomend for you, www.cavycages.com.
