Substitute for hamster bedding

Substitute for hamster bedding2007-11-24 22:15:09

Hi, I'm almost out of hamster bedding, and I really need to change their bedding. Since its 12:43 at night, I cant go to the store til tomorrow. Is there anything I can add in, so I have enough to change both hamster's cages, til I can get something more sutible tomorrow? I have some Timothy hay, and can I use any sort of newspaper or anything like that? What about regular paper? Thanks

Answers:

Don't use anything with ink like newspaper, the ink is harmful to them. Best substitutes are either paper towels shredded up or toilet paper, both must be dye free (no prints). We use shredded toilet paper for any mommas we get with our small animal rescue and they like it. When you go out tomorrow to get new litter, make sure to use a litter like Care Fresh and not any wood shaving or wood chips litters. All wood litters are harmful to hamsters and ones like pine or cedar emit toxic fumes when the hamster urinates on it, this can be deadly in some cases. Pine, aspen, and other wood litters also can cause allergic reactions in small animals. I've personally seen this and all required to be treated by a vet. We only use the Care Fresh with all our small animals no matter which breed they are.

any kind of paper
Your best bet is newspaper because its the most absorbant, jsut be sure to shred it up really well so its like their cedar. If your hamster is very smelly because of the cedar try switching the bedding to a recycled cardboard. It looks like the cedar but its more absorbant and doesnt have such a strong smell. Its a bit more expensive but lasts much longer. You can find it at any pet store or walmart.
