Taking my hamster for a trip

Taking my hamster for a trip2007-11-24 22:15:12

I am going to my grandparents house and it's 6 hours away. I could leave my dwarf hamster at home, but sometimes it gets hot in our house if you don't turn on the a/c.

I'm wondering if it's safe for a dwarf hamster to stay in a car for 6 hours or if it's safe for a dwarf hamster to be left at home for 4 days. and i don't have anybody to look after him while i'm gone.

and if i do bring him along, what should i bring him in? or what should i bring?

Answers:

I used to bring my hamster back and forth from college with me and she did fine. You'll want to make sure to have a water bottle available for him, but don't keep it attached to the cage the whole time. If you do this, the litter or hamster can get wet and the hamster can get sick. If you have a small travel cage use that, if not I would invest in one because a large cage takes up a lot of room and is less steady in a car. With a smaller one, you can keep it on your lap so that the cage doesn't shake as much and the hamster doesn't get too frightened.

Good luck!

he should be fine at home, but if you are going to bring it.

bring a bottle of water for it and a baggie full of food. your car's a/c and your grandparent's a/c should suffice

take him with you he could get lonely and you should carry him in a cage or in a dwarf hamster carrier hope this helps HOPE YOU HAVE FUN TO YOU AND YOUR DWARF HAMSTER
Some hamsters do fine on the road. Petsmart has carriers built just for it. If you do decide to bring him, remember to also bring his cage and not just the carrier.
bring him along...hamsters can get ornery if you don't play with them for a few days and if the a/c isn't going to be on then he could get heat stroke...first, buy a sturdy car carrier (I use the plastic cages they have in the reptile section at petco-bigger than the hamster carriers, very sturdy with a tight lid, and fit right on the seat next to you or on your lap)...second, make sure that the carrier is like a mini home (lay down bedding, put in a bowl of food, give him a chew toy, and make sure he has water...if the water bottle doesn't fit in the carrier then get a small food bowl and fill it half way with water-this will be ok for temporary use in the car ONLY)...third, give him a natural preventative to wet tail because a car ride can be stressful and stress is the cause of wet tail (before leaving town, buy a fresh head of cabbage at the grocery store and put a chunk of the cabbage in the carrier on the car ride-this will prevent wet tail!)...forth, keep the temperature comfortable for him in the car...fifth, think ahead:

make sure your grandparents are ok with him coming.

make sure they have room for his cage in the house.

know whether or not they have a cat or dog to watch out for.

pack the hamsters cage, bedding, wheel, food, water bottle, the rest of the cabbage, and his roll-about ball to unpack when you get there...and good luck! enjoy your trip!

If it is just a hamster you should be safe just bringing the whole cage with you. Just keep the AC in the car on and you should be fine.
i would keep the cage covered during the trip, all the commotion could stress him out
