Teddy Bear Hamsters
Well I found baby Teddy Bear hamsters in the paper for $5 so I brought it home and put it with my other one that's 4 months old and my older one bit it and now my new one has a HORRIBLE mark on it.Any suggestions??(I have it in a rubbermaid tote until I get another cage..
Answers:You may want to take it to the veternarian and let him/her check the bite mark out to be sure it is not infected.
My guess is the other hamster went after it. Adult hamsters of the same sex usually do not get along. It may require veterinary care so it does not get infected.
Firstly, teddy bear hamsters just don't mix, especially at that older age. Split them apart immediently, and try to keep the wound as clean as possible. Take it to the vets, and give it any treatment needed.
If possible, try to clean the wound with a tiny amount of hydrogen peroxide (if this is a younger person, have a parent help) at least once a day, for a few days. If signs of infection appear, swelling, redness, pus or drainage, or the wound gets worse, then he should be seen by a vet.

The rubbermaid tote is an excellent cage.

Oh!! Never put a new + BABY hamster with an older hamster!! That will always result in trouble. You should definitely be keeping separate, cleaning the wound, and finding a new cage for it. You seem to be doing fine now that you have realized the problem.
Hamsters can be very territorial and you put the new one in the old one's home without giving them a chance to get to know one another. Also, some of them can be bullies by nature.
this was a silly thing to do. As a hamster owner did you not realise that most hamster breeds are solitarary animals and must live on their own?If put together they can fight to the death. Please be a responsible pet owner and do your research before taking on the responsibility of a pet. Seperate them now. And take the hamster that has been bitten to the vets for a check over.
Hamsters are solitary animals and should never be kept together, same species or not. Even different sexes is a hard thing to govern because they still may fight. If you are pairing them for the sake of breeding, let them do their thing and then separate them again. The only time they get along is when they are very young but once they mature, all bets are off.
Basically, hamsters are very territorial and will kill eachother because of it. They also have a tendancy to be canibalistic so be careful.
The best thing you can do is just separate them and set them up in different cages. There is no way you will be able to keep them together or with any other hamster.
