Teddy bear hamsters are better, I have found that the dwarf hamsters can be very aggressive. I bought one once and never even got to hold it. Also for cages, I think the 2 story wire ones are always nice. It allows the hamster a lot freedom to go upstairs or down and have a wheel in there for him and all. Plus teddy bears are really cute and fuzzy and they seem to be pretty gentle.

Teddy Bear is easy to keep tame. Dwarfs are jumpy and can bite. THat's the only big difference.

Your cage should be bigger vertically than horizontally (hams love to climb up and down) and have two stories. The kind with a seperatable wire portion and plastic portion are the easiest to clean. Dont' get the crazy cages with all the tubing and add ons. Those are very difficult to clean and your hamster won't even play with the toys (those are only good for mice).

You should get a teddy bear hamster.

For the cage get one of the 'my first hamster home' cages or one that comes equipped with a wheel, it saves a lot of room.

I'd get a teddy bear hamster and i have a "my first home" and a "super pet" and they both work good to keep clean.I have 2(Elmo & Gizmo)and they're both teddy bear hamsters and they are so friendly. get a 2 or 3 story cage...(i have a 3 story and mine seems to like it better than my 2 story cage)Well have fun with whatever you choose

I would recommend a Teddy Bear hamster. They are more social and friendly. A good cage would be a Super Deluxe My First home kit. Even though it says it works for rats it works fantastic for hamsters, I have a Syrian female who absolutely adores it. She will spend time climbing up and down the bars. The cage costs around $40 but comes w/ bedding, food bowl, treat and more. You have to get a larger hamster though, because a dwarf might be able to squeeze through the bars. Some of the stuff might be rat, but if it comes w/ food that is fine because hamsters like bigger pieces to eat than the small things that come in cheap hamster food. They have one designed for hamsters, but it seems to small. Another good cage seems to be the CritterTrails. They have 2-3 story one that come w/ hideout and other things for your hamster. I have never had on ebefore but they seem like good cages.
