I'm reprinting my original answer for you with some additions.

I'm so very sorry that this happened to you. But with what you describe he had either wet tail which is very difficult to treat without a vets help or he had an intestinal infection which is also hard to recover from. My own hamster, Jet, used to sit here at the computer with me died this past March of an intestinal infection, but I was lucky to have had him the 8 months I did for he was about 3 yrs old and a rescue. Even with 2 rounds of antibiotics, we made the decision to put him down since he was only getting worse. If your other hamster should develop the same symptoms, get her to the vet right away. I've seen wet tail go from hamster to hamster at our local pet store. We found 5 with possible wet tail in one cage alone on day. Since this one died from it possibly, you need to sterilise the cage and rinse it very well before putting the female in there. I would not get any more cagemates for her espically if she is a Sryian (large breed). (see below for why) I've been very lucky with none as of yet getting wet tail. If I remember right, wet tail takes only a few days from the time it's noticed until most pass from it.
