The pet store said gerbil but it looks like a mouse, how do you tell2007-11-24 22:15:17
He is about 3.5 inches with a 4 inch tail and is a grey color. My friend just came over and said it's a mouse because it raises to it's hind feet and stands, she says gerbils don't do that. Anyone know if it's a gerbil or mouse?
Answers:Both gerbils and mice can stand on their hind legs, but a mouse does so less often. A mouse is generally smaller than an adult gerbil, has larger ears and it's tail and ears are hairless. A gerbil's coat is a bit longer than a mouse's, their front legs are shorter and hind legs larger than a mouse's, and their ears and tails are furred.
Google 'mouse pic' and 'gerbil pic' and you will see the differences.
Gerbils have thicker tails
It sounds like a Gerbil to me...they have long tail. I have had Gerbils and Mice.Gerbils stand on there hind feet all the time! Sometimes is they feel threatened or want to mate they thump their feet like crazy to warn other/call others. Sounds like a Gerbil to me, especially because of the length of the tail :) Also I'm sure the pet store knows what they are talking about.
if it has a furred tail it's a gerbil
gerbils are larger than mice and they have furred tails, and your friend is wrong gerbils DO stand on their hind feet (i believe all rodents do this)
can you give us a picture of it?
They really should be pretty easy to tell apart.
