What can I do to help regain my hamsters trust
I got a hamster about 3 weeks ago and everything was fine.. she was starting to let me pick her up, so after a few days I took her out of the cage and sat on the floor with her. Once on the floor she started getting scared and ran under the tv so I went to put her back in her cage. When we got to the cage she started squirming in my hands and fell onto the floor from about 1.5 ft, I managed to get her back in her cage but now when I put my hand in the cage she is frightened again like she was when we first got her.
Do I need to start all over again with the taming? and she seems fine but should I take her to a vet just in case?
Answers:Food is the way to a hamsters heart. You sounded like you were doing great before and were very patient. That's great. You may have to repeat the taming process but it will go faster since she is familiar with it already. I have not known a hamster to hold a grudge, as they are very loving creatures. I have dropped my hamster and he has always forgiven me. Now he just looks at me as if to say: "Don't you go dropping me again!" Don't worry she will come around.
She is probably fine. If you see any signs of abnormal behavor, limping etc... then I would take her to the vet. But now I would start the entire taming process over. www.hamsterhideout.com is a great site.
Good luck
She will be fine, but she got a bit of a fright. Give her a day or so on her own, then speak very soothingly and softly to her, and offer her lots of yummy treats from your hand. Get her an exercise ball if you have not already. This gives hamsters the opportunity to have a good run about the house without coming to harm.
