What can I do to stop my female rat getting tumors on her body2007-11-24 22:16:41

So all you can do is get a new one, love it and be realistic.

There are no guarantees in life.

Give it a nice big cage to live in, I took 2 rabbit cages and modified them to fit together and gave my rat lots of toys and interaction. Fresh clean water, good quality food with variety. Hope for the best.

You should find a rat breeder, the ones from PetCo & stores like that do not have quality rats. & That is one thing rats get are tumors. I've had 2 die from them. But look for a breeder in your area they breed higher quality rats. Hope this helped!

i had a hamster that got them and all i could do was well pray but nothing realy she had to be put down it just got to big sorry.

Unspayed female rats are prone to developing mammary tumors, pituitary tumors and other estrogen-dependent tumors as they age. At the time of menopause (450-540 days) mammary tumor incidence increases sharply and pituitary tumors begin to appear. A second increase in mammary and pituitary tumors occurs around the end of the second year (from 600-800 days).

Most of the tumor susceptibility research in unspayed rats has been done on different strains of laboratory rats. Strains and populations differ in how susceptible the females are to developing tumors.
