What can I let my hamster play with that I can find around my house2007-11-24 22:16:43

My mom is letting me get a hamster, and I want to make sure that it has a good habitat. What should I put in its cage?

Answers:

No cloth!! The hamster can eat the threads and have problems with blockages, or get the thread wrapped around limbs. Seriously.

Food cardboard boxes are fun for you because you can cut them up, cut holes in them, fit them together, and make castles or mazes. Connect them by cutting out strips of the cardboard and fitting them into slits in other boxes. Hamsters love to build sleeping nests in the boxes.

Paper towel rolls and toilet paper rolls are good, but make sure to slit them down the center so the hamster won't get stuck.

Hamsters also like large cups, large jars, and mugs. You can put a mug in the freezer for an hour on a hot day, then put it back in your hamster's cage. Just make sure the hamster can turn around, some hamsters panic if they can't and there isn't an exit ahead.

Unscented toilet paper is good too, hamsters love to make nests out of it and tear it up.

All of these ideas are pretty simple, but what your hamster would like is very different than what you would like. You might like flashy colors, but your hamster couldn't care less. Sometimes the simple toys are really the best. You might like variety and might think your hamster's getting bored, but hamsters like stability. Don't change all the toys around at once, change them slowly. These are just some suggestions, but even these few toys would be enough to make your hamster happy, as long as you have a large cage. Large plastic storage bins that have been modified for ventilation make nice large cages with plenty of space for toys.

toilet roll tubes, lots of shredded cloth thats what my hamster played with and it lived a good three and a half years which is good for hamsters

If you cut holes in a empty clenex box the hamster will love playing with it by climbing in it out of it and on top of it, also they love sleeping in them too! :)

The cardboard left over after you finish a roll of toilet paper is awesome! They actually SELL practically the same thing at petco for hamsters when you can get it for free.
