Wash the cage and change the bedding regularly to prevent odours. If any of your hamster is ill (e.g. diarrhoea, mites), cleaning will have to happen more often. In case the cage smells (which is not supposed to if you clean it regularly), you can try a cage deodorizing spray for small animals to disinfect the cage.

Some examples of safe bedding are shavings made of aspen, as well as Carefresh pet bedding.

Pine shavings are no longer to be used. The oils in pine has been proven to cause illness to small rodents.

If a hamsters cage is being cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis it should not smell at all. A product called carefresh can replace your normal sawdust/woodchip as this absorbs wee better and keeps the cage fresher for longer

DO NOT USE CEDAR CHIPS! They are known to cause respitory infections! Instead, CareFresh Pet Bedding and Litter. I use it for my hamsters ( I have four- two girls in one cage and the other two boys are in seperate cages) and it works wonders. That, along with a tiny bit of baking soda at the bottom of the cage is magnificent!

Try Critter Comfort. It does smell like citrus fruit but it is better than the smell of the hamster number 1 and2. It is not wood shavings. It is safe for them to eat.
