LOL if your mom is anything like me (mom of 4 boys) its going to be hard to convince her. when you loose interest in your "new" friend who do you think is going to pick up the slack. when pets are brought into families mom should be the first one asked if SHE wants the pet, because ultimately when everyone looses interest, its mom that looks after the pet.

rats should be kept in pairs because there social animals who need and crave attention of their own kind... plus rats can be expensive should they get sick.

i have spent about 400$ in vet bills in the last 16 months on my girls (rats). i would spend that and more again if i had too. rats regardless of what people think, require a lot of personal time with you as their owner. they crave the attention with you. theres nothing more adorable then little chattering teeth and little rattie hands holding the cage bars begging to be played with.

i love rats and have chosen them as pets, your mom might not feel the same way.

there are other costs involved as well, and whose going to flip the bill for all of that?

good sized cage with levels start at 50$

wheel 10-20$

water bottles 3-20$

food dishes 5-15$

hide box 5-10$

carefresh 20-30$ (rats can't have pine or cedar wood chips, it can kill them)

rat lab blocks 5-10$ a month

hate to tell you this, i can see where your mom is coming from, so i can't help you convince her. the reason i even bothered to tell you all this is so that you see it in black and white how much ratties can cost you.

Well, I don't have to tell you why your mom might NOT want a rat because rattiegirl has done a great job of that-You do need to consider all of those things before getting one. But if she is willing to let you get a pet , and is just afraid of a rat, she should know that they make wonderful pets! They're relatively easy and inexpensive compared to other pets. They can become very sweet and friendly if they are allowed to mingle w/ humans. They are just as clean as rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, and hamsters. They are also quiet.
