You want to try and remove the rat if possible. If you are in an apartment... you should demand it. It happened to me this spring at work...unfortunately the custodians couldn't get to it. They just told me to wait a few weeks and it would go away. It wasn't great there for awhile, but it did eventually go away.

Sounds like you need to call a pest control company and get ahold of their wildlife division. That can be spendy, but the'll get it taken care of.

You can always go into the city and find a stray cat and give it a meal. Then you should borrow someones kid and cover them in soap and put them in there to clean it.
