I really want a black one but my friend has one and says they only come in like light brown. What other colors are there? Are there any?

Teddy bear hamsters are Syrian hamsters. Syrian hamsters come in many different color variations from golden brown to black and white to shades of darker brown and all mixes imaginable. The color variations are due to genetics. Syrian hamsters grow to be 6-8 inches long. The different colors get different names in pet stores (teddy bear, panda bear for black and white, black bear for mostly black, etc) but all large hamsters are Syrian hamsters.

Dwarf hamsters are only 2-3 inches long. There are four breeds of dwarf hamsters: Campbell's Russian, Winter White, Chinese, and Roborovski. The range of colors goes from white to black with all sorts in between. Most dwarf hamsters in pet stores are color variations of Campbell's Russian dwarf hamsters, and have the same silly names (black bear or blackberry for black Russian dwarfs, cinnamon for argente Russian dwarf, etc).
