What different kinds of fresh foods can I give to my hamster, and how much
I'm new to having a hamster, having gotten my little Helena about two weeks ago, and I've been trying to figure out what different kinds of fresh foods they can eat, and which they probably shouldn't have. I gave her some of my green bell pepper earlier, and she seemed to like it. I've also given her a little bit of apple.
Just trying to get this down to a system, so I don't screw up. I've read a couple books on the furry little creature, and I've been to the aspca site and read that, but I'm just curious on what they like, what they can eat, how much of it they can eat, and how often they should eat it.
Answers:I use to give my hammy baby carrots, cabbage and romaine lettuce. But what ever you do make sure to throw out any un eaten veggies the next day. When I use to work at a pet store I use to put some ben bac on hamsters cabbage it helped them with the tummy's because hamsters have a tendency to get wet tail which is diereah in small animals which could be fatal. I use to clean her cage onces a week, give her veggies in the early evening, change her water and food before i go to sleep that was my routine. Also they love timothy hay to snuggle in and to eat for roughage. Oh and carefresh is the best bedding for all small animals hope this helps!!
Make sure not to give your hamster too many greens because they will have the "the runs" if you know what I mean. Hamsters love carrots and apples a lot, but make sure not to give them citrus fruits or fruits with too much sugar. It may be tasty to them one minute, but the next they will feel sick. I'll give you a website to check out that will tell you more.
It's best to introduce one new food at a time to any animal, just in case any allergies or health problems arise from them (such as diarrhea). There is formulated hamster food sold in bags which should be their main source of food and provide the necessary nutrients and wear down their teeth (which continuously grow). They do like fruits and vegetables, but of course every hamster is different! Some of mine liked carrots and some would only touch strawberries!! Try out some leafy veges that are dark green in color as they have the most nutrients. Iceburg lettuce is horrible for any animal because they have very little nutrients and are mostly water. This makes the animal full and they won't eat the food they need to. Try new things, but stick to healthy fruits and vegetables. Try one thing at a time and always in moderation. They sell hamster food in pet stores for a reason: it is well balanced. Good luck.
they like carrots, strawberry, cheerios, yogurt, celery, hard boiled egg pieces, dog biscuit pieces, don't give em too much fresh, they get the poops, i give one piece a day, and you can but yogurt drops for them, instead of real yogurt if you like. and they like a small piece of raw groundmeat every now and then.
broccolli is good and carrots..
dont give them anything spicy like bell pepper, pepper, onions, green onions, etc!!
and it depends on your hamster as well. my hamsters just 'put away' they food they weren't going to eat and stored it in some other place. although, this makes you have to clean the cage every week or more (rotting food) so be careful..
