guinea pigs have front teeth that are used in the wild to grind down tough plants.. so the teeth have to grow continuously to keep up with being chipped away on a daily basis... if your guinea pig doesn't get enough to chew on then it's teeth will grow too long and it could hurt itself with them... I've heard that a mouse can puncture the roof of it's mouth and even its skull if they don't keep their teeth munched down!!

so go ahead... get the block of wood... it's worth it///

In total guinea pigs have 20 teeth although you can only see the 4 incisors. These teeth continuosly grow and if the guinea pigs are not given regular things to chew on like wooden blocks or untreated branches they will get malocclusion.

Things like hay and pellets help to file down their teeth but often they need something more like a wooden block or untreated branches to help with this process. Teeth trimming is not recommended and should only be used as a last resort.

No, they won't kill you. They chew the wood to make the bones on their teeth stronger so they can chew throught peanuts and celery.
