Do they think they're moving someplace? Do they know it's just exercise? I think they think they're going someplace different but I don't know?
Answers:Hamsters have very poor vision, and as someone else said, the running in the wheel mimics behaviour that they would have in the wild - run very quickly and for a while and then stop for a bite to eat. I don't think there's too much going on in their little minds. Remember, they're not einsteins - they're rodents. Their job is to store food, eat, drink, pee, poo, look pretty and run.
Why can't I get where I am going. I feel like I am going in circles and I am getting dizzy. How do you stop this darn thing?

They don't think =p they just love to run... they are very active. when they run, it makes them happy.
They, anxious and thoughtless, get on the wheel to run, get caught up in the highness of 'the zone' and give no further thought whatsoever.

In the wild, hamsters are known to travel very far distances at night to get food. Running in their wheel simulates this activity - or else they'd need a very, very long cage.
I think hamster's use the wheel as a source of entertainment, as well as exercise. They love to run, fast. They love running around in their ball too. And I get a kick out of watching them run across the floor crashing into things.
