I think one thing you should know and the website should mention it to. Gerbils mate shortly after the female gives birth. My mother gerbil raised 9 on her own just fine. I can give you another website with info but you have to have a livejournal.com account. I hope this helps.
I know what you mean
I had a similar situation with hamsters. I had two females, and a male, and one of the females had a litter, but pretty much two days later, the babies were dead.
Here's some advice:
figure out which female is the mother of the litter, and remove the other male and female from that cage. By 'quarentining' the mom and babies, they will have a better chance of surviving.
This means that you may end up needing 3 separate cages, but if you want succesful breeding, it's a necessity.
EDIT TO ADD:
Light will fry the babies.. i know it sounds harsh, and it is! Do not use a heat light, they don't need it. It will make the babies too hot, and the mom will probably move the litter if a bright light is shining on her nest any ways. The bedding she uses will keep the babies plenty warm. Don't disturb it either. I know they are kind of cute, but if you want the mom to raise them properly, it's best that you don't touch them.
