What is a Good Cage for a Guinea Pig that I can get at the store2007-11-24 22:17:28

I am only going to get one Guinea Pig. Does anyone have any cages i can get from petco or petsmart that they will recommend? Thanks

well, they don't need anything too fancy- when they're bigger they can't sqeeze into tubes, and wheels are bad for them.

Get one that doesn't have that wire bottom. It makes their toenails curl under.

I prefer the ones where the guineapig can lay directly on the litter.

One that doesn't have a wire bottom. The cedar chips seems to work the best for the guinea pigs, and they real seem to enjoy making homes out of the chips. Just look for a small one(probably about 24" by 18" or so, and not very high). None of my guinea pigs seemed to care about wheels or salt licks, so I would bother with that. However, you will need a water bottle and a small container for guinea pig food pellets.

MemphisGal is correct. Almost all the cages Petco and Petsmart have are TOO SMALL. Would you like to be confined to a tiny cage? A single guinea needs about 7.5 sq. feet for a cage. Yes, it'll survive in a smaller one, but you're not doing right by the animal. The only adequate sized store cages will cost you way over $100. I doubt your parents will go for that..
