What is a good bedding for a guinea pig2007-11-24 22:17:28

I have an abyssinian guinea pig (the one that looks uncombed) and he also likes to be with his back somewhere in a corner. He keeps going backwards until there is something behind him.

I live on a farm, I have bedding stuff, so I dont need to buy. Now I was wondering what would be the best bedding for him. Currently I use hay, cause in a shop he also had hay. And I think he also eats the hay or maybe he is just chewing. Is ok for a guinea pig to eat hay? But instead of hay would it be better, if I would give him straw?

In a shop they also said that sawdust is good, but I dont know which one. That sawdust for horses or for pets like on a picture?

What about the floor? I bought the cage with plastic bottom, but if he is peeing, then he gets dirty cause peeing wont dry quickly on a plastic. Would a wooden bottom be good? Cause it can absorb the peeing, but then it can start to rot. Or I can keep changing the bottom.

Answers:

Carefresh is the best bedding for guinea pigs, never use sawdust, or any type of pine bedding, because your guinea pig can develop respiratory issues, and crusty eye, if the sawdust gets into his eye. And, yes it is more than okay for guinea pigs to eat hay, they actually need it daily. Also, make sure that you give your guinea pig some source of Vitamin C daily, because their bodies don't produce its own vitamin C, and if they don't get enough vitamin C, they can suffer from Vitamin C deficiencies. And for your guinea pigs home, the plastic cage bottom is just fine. What you can do though, is during the week, do spot cleaning, and then do one thorough cleaning once a week, then your guinea pig won't get too dirty from walking in its own mess. But never use wood for your cage floor, because yes the wood would rot, and its too hard of a surface for the guinea pigs feet. Also, if the guinea pig chews on the wood, that could make him vulnerable to getting splinters, or getting harmed by pieces of wood sticking up. Well, Hope this helped you out a little or a lot. Have a good day:)

One of my guinea pigs have straw, the other has wood shavings. He likes to chew on the straw, and I think its okay for them to eat hay. Wooden bottoms are not good for cages, as they absorb the pee but they rot easily, and are not clean or hygenic. A plastic bottom is much better. Just line the plastic with newspapers, and then put on the hay for it. Whether you use hay, straw or shavings, I think that they are all fine.
Hi there I use shredded paper although hay is good because they can eat it and it keeps them warm. For the floor I would use newspaper. That is what we use. You should clean the cage once a week. Guinea pigs make great loving pets. I used to own two and one of them used to jump in my lap and would pur when he saw me. Sadly he died on the 17th of May 2007. Oh that reminds me. Make sure to have sticks in the guinea pig home so that his/her teeth don't grow to long. Good luck and have fun.
Guinea pigs are SUPPOSED to eat hay. If they don't eat this then their teeth will grow too long and will require a vet to cut them.
