What is a good cage for 1 rat2007-11-24 22:17:28

If youve seen my other questions, sorry Ive been asking so many in little time. I plan on getting one rat, probably a Fancy Rat... and I want a cage. If I wanted a cage for my rat to be happy all its life and i dont have to change it what should I get?

I think a ten gallon tank with an upstairs apartment upstairs would be good. Most pet stores sell a caged apartment that connects on top of a ten gallon tank and your rat will have a lot of area to run around in.

I started out with a ten gallon for my rat, they are easier to change in my opinion- you can just hose the suckers out. Although, they tend to be a tad bit stinkier that wire cages. If you get a wire cage, do not get one with wire floors, this can easily break a rat's leg or even cause bumblefoot. I have a large Super Pet cage that works great for one rat- the top is wire and detaches from the plastic lining which makes it easier to clean. For easier cleanup and a cage that doesn't smell, I would go with the Carefresh bedding- a little pricer but worth it.

Please do your rat and yourself a big favor and buy a large double decker cage with a large, large wheel. When I bought Willie "Willard" I bought him a medium sized single level cage but now that he's grown it's just too confining. If the wheel is too small they will not use it, Willie just sleep's in his. Petco has a nice two level cage with a large wheel for $74.99 and a three level for $99.99. Some people suggest an aquarium but I don't like them because they don't allow for good ventilation.

for a rat the best type of cage would be a ten gallon aquarium. I would think like a guinny pig cage or something with wire it could escape out of.
