What is a reasonable life span for guinea pigs2007-11-24 22:17:31

I was wondering why the large disparity in estimates for the lifespan of guinea pigs. I have seen anywhere from 2 years to 12 years. Mine is 4.5 years old and sleeping more than usual. I am wondering if this is because she is an 'elderly' piggie, or a sick piggie. I can't take her to the vet right now because I am 700 miles away, and I am very worried.

The "average" lifespan of a guinea pig is 5-7 years, though of course you'll have some piggies that live longer, as well as shorter.

The change in your piggie's behavior could be that she's getting older. 4 1/2 years is considered to be a "senior." But don't fret - an older piggie can still be a happy piggie. Does she still eat and have interest in food? Spend lots of time with her and keep an eye out for any other different behaviors.

the average life span is normally 8-13 years. if it lives longer thats great. if its possible, call your vet from wherever you are. after all, who cares about long-distance! this is your pet we're talking about!

Just keep her comfortable, clean out her cage if you can. And keep a house or something she likes to sleep with\in around her. I don't think its because she is old, its probably because she is ill. Or maybe she is stressed because she is away from home. Hold her lots, then get her to the vet asap. Hope your Guinea Pig gets better!

The lifespan is usually around 3-8 years old. Though, some piggies only make it to about 2 years old. With proper care, a piggie should get to the age of at least 5 years old. Your piggie might be slowing down, since, your piggie is getting a little bit older, now! But, don't worry. This is all just life. My best friend has a guinea who is 5 years, about, and she sleeps all the time. I believe it is elderly age, and she is relaxs a lot more than usual. And the average life span is 5-8, but it can go up to 10-12.
