What is a safe way for my lil cousin to pick up my hamster
i dont want my hamster to bite her or anything so what is the safest way.my hamster is very social and loving but that can always change person to person
Answers:What if you picked your hammy up and put it in your cousin's hands? Make sure you go over the rules of holding the hamster; no squeezing, no sudden movements, no loud noises.
Having her wear gloves is a neat idea, but then she won't be able to feel the hamster, and she would probably like that.
Have your cousin put her hand in the cage and let the hamster smell her. Also have her feed the hamster a treat or two. Be ready to grab your hamster quick if you have to. It would be a good idea to make sure there's nowhere for the hamster to hide if it happens to nip at her and she drops it. Have her sit in the middle of the bed, with the sheets straightened so there's no crevices for the hamster to hide in. Or, try in the bathroom with the door closed. Sit on the floor, have her towards the middle and you by the door. That way, if the hamster hits the floor, there's not really any place she can hide that you can't get her, and if she makes a run for the door you can try to head her off.
I just scoop my hamster up using both hands. That way she can't bite me.
cover her hands with a glove, cloth ect. make sure you have more than one layer(if you use cloth) so it wont go through it
she could get the part the closes it and get the hamster to crawl on to the top or put some hamster food in her hand and she may crawl in her hand and if that doesnt work you should get the hamster out and let it crawl to your cousin's hand
I had little kids pick up hamsters in an old cup. The hamster can climb in , and get the treats in the cup, and isnt being squished by little hands .
It depends how old your cousin is. If she is under 5 than it is not a good idea to allow her to hold the hamster. Young children can become frightened and easily panic and drop the hamster.
I had a friend(awhile ago), who was babysitting, the kids had a hamster, but where not supposed to hold it. My friend allowed the little girl to hold the hamster and the child got nervous when the hamster started moving and ended up dropping the hamster and then panicking when the hamster began moving on the floor, and accidently stepped on it.
Hamsters are very delicate. You may want to just allow your cousin to pet the hamster while you hold it(if she/he is young)
let the hamster out on the bed, let her play with the hamster then try to pick her up, they don't like to be approached in their cages by new people, or sometimes even us. LOL!
