What is going to happen to my hamster2007-11-24 22:17:33

when i was cleaning my hamster cage she crawled in to the holding cage i forgot about her and put the male in the hamster cage and went to the gerbil cage i put my only male gerbil in the holding cage with the female hamster i forgot about when i was put the gerbil back in his regular cage after about 4 hours i saw my female and seperated them the third day after (which is two days ago from now) she was getting fat and plump and hidding then i figured she bred with gerbil so what should i do give her a hamster pregnancy or treat as a gerbil and will the babies die?

Answers:

Although I'm not 100% sure, I don't really think it's possible to breed a gerbil and a hamster, because, as you can check in an encyclopedia, they are from different families, and different species that breed are usually from the same one. Besides, even if it were possible, 4 hours is too short for them to breed, especially because they are different and I guess it would take longer for them to engage in breeding activities.

However, there might be a small possibility for it to happen. I don't intend to ruin your day, but since the gerbil was the male and the hamster the female, chances are that babies will be as big as gerbil babies or even more, according to what usually happens in this inter-breeding cases. If this does happen, it could cause problems for your hamster, for the babies, or for both.

But don't be so worried. I wouldn't if I were you. Besides, two days is too short for your hamster to start getting fatter for pregnancy. Chances are it isn't pregnant and you're just worrying in vain. Whatever happens, good luck!!

I don't think I've ever heard of a hamster and a gerbil breding but I guess it possible. I would take her to a vet just to be on the safe side then you will get a pros advice.

Good Luck!

well maybe shes pregnant but i don't know maybe shes just fat and it takes awhile for a gerbil or a hamster to mate so i wouldn't be surprised if shes not pregnant :)
no your hamsters will not die
A gerbil and hamster cannot mate. I'm surprised though that the gerbil did not kill the hamster. Their latin name means "clawed warrior" and gerbils are very terriorial and aggressive of other species (or even gerbils) that are outside of their family clan.
