What is the best cage to use for a Syrian hamster2007-11-24 22:17:03

Should I buy:

1) Just a 10-gallon aquarium

2) A 10-gallon aquarium with a wire 'topper' (adding 4 levels)

3) A wire cage

4) A plastic cage

5) Other (please specify)

Answers:

A large wire cage would be the best. Aquariums don't offer enough ventilation. Syrians do get rather large...around 8 inches so the little plastic cages like the habitrails and critter trails are usually too small. Plus the tubes they offer aren't really big enough for a full grown syrian.

My favorite brand of cages is the My First Home series. They offer a large selection of cages and some even come with starter kits.

On a side note...try not to use too much seed diet for them also. Many pet stores have pet block or lab block. Kaytee makes some. It's a complete diet in every bite, it helps combat wettail and it can help keep their teeth trimmed down...

Definitely a wire cage b/c this has the proper ventilation to keep odor down. Syrians needs this because they will get rather large (between 6-8 inches in size) and get stinky rather quickly if kept in a poorly ventilated cage (i.e. plastic or glass). Wire cages are healthier for your Syrian and you will only have to clean it once a week (plastic and glass you may have to clean at least twice a week to keep odor down).

You should get a 10-gallon aquarium with a wire top. I did that with my Syrian hamster, Teddy, and works really well. Usually if you don't have a wire top your hamster is more likely to get out.

a wire cage and dont but to much tubes casue they are a big hamster and they can get stuck and you cant get them out so do a wire cage w/like rails
