What is the best diet for hamsters, store bought or all Natural2007-11-24 22:17:03

If you choose store bought, please share the brand name and type that you prefer to use.

If you choose All Natural, please share what you feed your hamster on a day to day basis, or reference a book or website that use to help create your Hamsters menu.

I am probably going to get a Teddy Bear Hamster next weekend and want to ensure I give him the best food possible.

I used to work for petco and was a small animal specialist there and had many small animals on my own. The brand I used was kaytee forti diet rodent blocks. It is compressed blocks of hamster food that you would see in the mixed bags but compressed into one block and its great because not only does it give them what they need in one block and they wont pick and chose from what they want and what they need because its all in one but it also helps with their natural need to kn aw. What I did for my hammy was to get a large bag of that and a small bag of the regular mix it lasted a long time and the small bag of the regular hamster mix just gave them a little verity so that she did not get board. I also recommend giving fresh veggies with a measured amount of ben bac which is also found in the small animal isle. It helps aid in digestion and a little timothy hay for them to munch on and to make a nest with , timothy hay helps with roughage. Filtered water is also the best for all animals!
