i put down newspaper and spread shavings over top

it gets all over the place

also what are some ways to eliminate the smell??

Try Carefresh, it's usually less messy and easier to clean up ;).

Also, aspen can help with the smell.

Don't buy cedar, though, if you don't want to risk health problems in your hamster. Pine isn't the best, either.

There are odor eliminators you can buy to spray on the cage, but I'm not sure how safe these are for rodents.

get wood shavings cuz the smell of the wood will take over the piss smell and if you lay down like 2 or 3 inches of it the piss will go to the bottom eliminating some of the odor. the hamster will also enjoy digging his own tunnels, at least mine did.(they like to hide, naturally. I think they know the bright colored tubes stand out haha)

Wood chips and pet fluff are good and you can buy them at any pet store, you may also want to buy some odor eliminator...

Use something like carefresh or critter care. That stuff is what hamsters like the best because it is easier for them to curl up and go to sleep. Just a tip, never use cedar. Cedar kills hamsters pretty quickly. So, yeah use carefresh or critter care. And its not expensive at all. Its only $4.00-$5.00 a box of it
