All pet stores get their animals from people who breed them regardless of genetics and health - for money. Not many people who breed good quality animals just sell them to a pet store not knowing of what will happen to them. If you even find a good gerbil breeder, you will find their personalities are much more appealing than the snappy ones you'll see at a pet store.

You should actually go to petfinder.com and adopt one. Plug in your zip code, gender preferences, and age preferences and you can find one in your area that needs a great home.
