What is the best pet store to get rats2007-11-24 22:17:04

I can't find a rat breeder where I live so I want to know which pet store takes the best care of their animals? I want to get two rats. I'm definitly not going to Petsmart.

First try petfinder.com and see if you can find local breeders. If you cannot, then I'd suggest going to a small, locally owned reputable pet store in your area. I'm not sure where you're from but alot of the times big name chain stores will buy animals in bulk and they wont really get the care and attention they need. If you get one that wasnt properly socialized as a baby, you'll have a big challenge awaiting you. It really depends on each individual pet store though. I suggest going around and viewing the rats for a while, see how they act, if they appear healthy, etc, and then ask one of the workers to get one out that you're interested in. See how the rat acts when it's handled, if it freaks out, is calm, etc. It's normal for rats to be a little scared and most can be quickly turned into loving wonderful pets, but if the rat seems to hate being held, tries frantically to get away, bites, etc, then you might want to consider going elsewhere (unless you enjoy a challenge), because thats probably a sign that they dont spend much time with their rats.

Basically any pet store will have them. I bought mine from a family owned place in Indy. Most places only carry feeder rats, so they're pretty cheap. If you have a Petco in your area, they seem to be pretty good with their animals. I'm still learning about mine, so good luck!!

are there any local petstores in your area? id try those, theres a place near where i live that is owned by a great owner, and their pets are always in great condition, so try local!
