What is the best pet to get for a 10 gallon tank
It can be a mammal or reptile ( preferably a mammal) but NOT fish spiders, scorpions or other largeish bugs. Im thinkin about a turtle but it might be to big for a 10 gallon tank. So based on your experience what is the best smallish pet to have?
Answers:I was a hamster-keeper at one time and kept my Syrian Hamsters singularly in aquariums for their safety (I had/still have cats). I bought a single female dwarf hamster when the critters first came on the pet market. She was comfortable in a 10 gal. tank. Back then we didn't know that dwarfs were social animals, but now that we do, I can see two to three Dwarfs in a 10 gal. More recently I housed 3 female mice quite comfortably in a 10 gal. tank. When the mouse girls passed away I set the same tank up for my Tiger Salamander that now resides in it. I can't speak about reptiles because I haven't kept a wide variety of reptiles as pets. I kept garter snakes as a kid, and I know they would be fine for a time in a 10 gal. tank.
It's a myth that turtles will grow no bigger then their habitat space allows them. My sister-in-law's red-eared sliders are now the size of dinner plates, and she keeps three of them in an 80 gal. tank.
And you probably thought I only knew about rats, eh? :) And on that note, aquariums are not suitable habitats for pet rats.

"my life has gone to the rats"
a mammal, i'd say a mouse or a rat...my roommate has a mouse and it's amazing. he's a sweetheart and they aren't very expensive and a 10 gallon tank would be plenty of space. maybe even get a few mice so they have friends. :)
Get a Baby Bearded Dragon or a Baby Corn Snake.
There are different size turtles, so that is a possibility. Have you thought of layering rocks that are partially submerged, tadpoles in the water and newts or salamanders to go between the two. You could even have a small tree frog in the habitat. Just an idea.
Green turtle
A 10 gallon is too small for a turtle. Some small species of snakes or lizzards might fit though. As for mammals, I would only reccomend a pair of mice, dwarf hamsters, or gerbils.
Aqaurium are ade for fish or reptiles. I never suggest putting a mammal in aquariums. They have airtight sides for a reason.
a fire bellied toad.
Gerbils :)
get a small turtle or a mouse.
