What is the best type of bedding for my hamster
I bought a hamster a week ago and i've been wondering what the best type of bedding is ...i read somewhere that i could use shredded up pieces of kleenex or toilet paper, is that any good??
:)
Answers:Unsafe beddings:
Cedar (Pretty much the worst stuff you can get)
Pine (Some people say that kiln-dried pine is alright; I can't confirm or deny this)
Yes, they CAN cause respiratory illnesses and organ damage. People like them because they cover up bad odors, but it's just selfish--why risk your pet's life just to make his cage smell nicer?
Safe beddings:
Aspen (Widely available, I'm using it currently for my rats and my rabbit--smells pretty good, too)
Hemp (A little harder to find, but works well)
Carefresh (Many pet stores now carry this, it's excellent stuff)
Corncob (Never used this, but it should be OK)
Yesterday's News (Never used it either, but again, it's fine as bedding)
You can use shredded, unscented kleenex as nesting material ^-^.
kleenex and toilet paper shreds will hardly absorb anything. use fine shavings.
I would say Pine. My hamster LOVES it. And it absorbes pee and it help the stench go away!
don't use saw dust because the dust from it gets into their lungs
white pine shavings are usually the best...
