dont get a dwarf hamster cuz i had two and they both got out of the cage ran around the house and then we cetched them and brot them back to the store
I highly suggest not getting a dwarf hamster especially a Russian one. They tend to be mean and bite a lot. I had one and we couldn't even feed it without it biting us. I would go with a honey bear hamster or a black bear hamster. My honey bear is active and she has never bitten me.

A honey bear/black bear hamster are bigger than a dwarf hamster, so they need a little bit bigger cage than a dwarf. A dwarf hamster does not need multiple levels, but a honey bear will. About 2 levels will be fine or one you can add on to like a CritterTrail one that can be found at PetSmart or PetCo. The best I have found is one with metal bars and the hamster will bite the metal bars, but the likely hood of it biting through the bars isn't very high. They're natural chewers.

Personally, I would suggest not getting a dwarf hamster - yes, they are so cute, however, regular dwarf hamsters have a reputation of being more likely to bite than other types of hamsters. I work at Petco, and we carry two other types of dwarf hamsters - Robo and Djungarian Hamster. They are the same size as a dwarf hamsters, but can have totally different personalities. If you don't want one that bites, try looking into those two types first - they are equally cute, but the likelihood of a bite is less.

As for the cage, a good rule of thumb is the bigger the better - even for a small dwarf hamster. SuperPet makes some awesome cages that a just about escape proof. The bottom 4-5 inches (height) is plastic and the rest (minus the top), is wire which gives any hamster good venilation. Honestly though, if you can't afford to get a bigger one, there are smaller ones out there that will work - just make sure that the hamster has enough room for a exercise wheel and a place to sleep. Good Luck!
