Do I talk to them first, or do I just call the authorities?

I don't want the rodents to come over to my area.

It depends on what kind of rodents you are talking about and where you live. If you live in a city, chances are you have a rodent problem too, you just haven't found out about it yet, particularly if you are talking about rats. In any case, you don't need to, but you should talk to your neighbors and attack the problem together. That attack for rats in an urban environment, should be done by the city as you and your neighbor probably aren't the only ones that have rats. A rat control program usually consists of baiting burrows and holes, trapping inside and removing potential food sources. (this means any garbage, garden vegetables, trash piles, compost, dog and cat food, etc) Any neighborhood can get rats, and any neighborhood can control them. If the city doesn't have a rat control program, check with a pest control company about the cost of having them do a neighborhood program, and/or just you and your neighbor. You can control rats yourselves, but it takes diligence and handling some rather nasty baits. If handling pesticide is not your cup of tea, you may want to hire someone to do it.
