What is the common treatment for Chromodacryorrhea in rats2007-11-24 22:17:08

Recently we adopted a pet rat from a friend who is moving. The rat has a red colored crust around here eyes and nose and I suspect she has Chromodacryorrhea related to stress. She is also becoming very lethargic. Does anyone know what the common treatment is?

There is no treatment for porphyrin, it's only a side affect of a stressed or sick rat, or the rat is on deficient diet. The porphyrin will go away when the underlying problem is treated.

I was going to say that she is just stressed as she gets use to her new home, but the lethargy sends up a red flag for me.

Interesting fact:

New rat-keepers are startled by seeing what looks like blood around their rat's eyes and nose.

Porphyrin glows under a blacklight, whereas blood doesn't.

Chromodacryorrhea is just the scientific name for a rat's red colored tears, caused by a pigment in the the tears known as porphyrin, not really and actual 'condition.' While the red colored crust may be nothing to worry about (I have one rat who nearly always has just a hint of red crust around his nose, and he's perfectly happy and healthy), the addition of the lethargy could be a sign of an illness or depression.
