What is this big lump on the side of my hamsters neck2007-11-24 22:17:42

its on the neck not the cheek and its bigger than the hamsters head!!i dont think it hurts but it wasnt there yesterday and it really is big

Hamsters store food in there cheeks or jaws so it is probibly that. Maybe the food is stuck in there,

A tumor. My classroom rats got them. They're fine as long as the pet still has a good quality of life - but when they become too large, euthanasia is the kindest route. My vet says they are common in rodents.

there are only a few things it could be..

If the hamster is caged by itself, it could be...a spider or other bug bite...it could be a cancerous node.

If with other hamsters...it could be the above, or it could have gotten bit. In any of these cases, it needs vet care. Good luck.

The lump wasn't there yesterday at all? Then I would look for a possible sore that might have abcessed or a possibly a bug/spider bite.

It's most likely and abcess or a tumor. If it feels "attached" to where it is, it's most likely a harmful tumor.

I'd take your hamster to the vet to get it checked out and see if it can be removed.

It sounds like a tumor but I have never heard of one developing that quickly.

sounds like a tumour. my hamster had one so we took him to the vets and they said it was benign. it was so large he had to be operated on. the operation was a success.
