What is with this hamster2007-11-24 22:17:42

So..i bought a cute lil hamster yesterday. I chose him because he was so easy going and had no problem being handled. I brought him home, set up his cage and went out for a few hours.When i came home i went to pick him up. It was like he was a completely different creature. He was fearful and squaking. Now i understand his personality changes due to the new surroundings..but what's with the squaking? its the same noise my hamsters made when i was little when they would fight. Everytime i try and handle him he starts squaking..should i be concerned?

Answers:

The squeaking is most likely due to fear. Give your hamster a day or two to settle in before you handle her. Sit besides the cage and talk to her. This way she will get used to your voice and sent. When you do try to handle her take it slow, at first just petting her head, then holding her for a few minutes. I'm sure she'll settle in great and be the perfect pet! :)

Give him time.

He is afraid and in a new environment.

Talk to him a lot without picking him up.

Say sweet things to him, that way he can get used to your voice.

Hand feed him treats too.

He will learn to trust you.

hes prolly scared. not used to the new home life yet ... give him time and instead of picking him up just trying letting him smell your hand and tlkaing to him ...

the squaking is usually out of fear or anger, he could be scared and he could just want to be left alone. Give him time to get used to his new home and you.

Squealing, hissing, and teeth grinding is a sign of fear, and to warn you to leave him well alone. He needs to gain your trust as he is traumatised by the move from the pet shop to his new home. Some hamsters like mine fit straight in, others dont. Animals are like humans, they are unique and different to each other.
