He will settle in though, you just need patience, and time. When he is awake offer him treats from your hand and speak to him constantly in a soft voice. Dont ever wake him from his sleep. God, they are grumpy if you do this!!

For now, give him another 48 hours to settle in, then start again. Remember the more a hamster is handled, the more sociable it becomes. Good Luck.

Don't try to hold him yet since he's a little scared.Put some food on your hand and wait until he comes on your hand to eat the food.Then when he comes on your hand,gently stroke his back.Then he'll know that you mean no harm to him.Try to do this every day and see how it goes.
