What is wrong with my hamster2007-11-24 22:17:43

He has a pussing sore on his but and i don't know what it is. i put peroxide on it and cleaned it but i don't know what else to do. Do you know what it is or how i can help. The vet is not really an option right now.

It sounds like it may be an abscess. Is there another hamster in the cage that may have bitten him?

Keep it clean and make sure it is open to drain. Also, keep him from bothering with it. Keep an eye on it. You can also do warm compresses. Take a warm damp wash cloth and hold it over the wound. This helps free it from scabs to keep it open. You may want to get some Betadine solution for the warm compresses, too. This is a disinfectant and is much better than peroxide. Peroxide only cleans away blood - it does not disinfect. You can purchase Betadine at any drug store and it isn't very expensive. You put just a little bit in the water - mix it in till it looks like tea.

Abscesses can go away and come back so as soon as you are able, it would be best to take him to a vet. They can give you antibiotics which will help with infection.

I used to work at a vet and these are things that we had people do for their pets when they had abscesses. Remember, all of this will only work if it is an abscess. Only a vet can diagnose it, but it is something that can't hurt.

Just keep cleaning it everyday and it should heal on its own. If it is with another hamster, they could have been fighting, or if it was by itself it could have done it to itself.
