What kind of cages should a pair of Roborovski hamsters be kept in2007-11-24 22:17:12

I've heard that they aren't supposed to be set up in more than 2 cages because they can get territorial...is this true?

I have 2 Roborovskis in a Ferplast Duna Fun cage. I think it's ideal. They love to run or sleep in the tubes and they use the shelf - that is their "food court"! I took out the top shelf as it was in the way.

In any case, get the biggest cage you can get, as they like to RUN! You should give them lots of places to hide as they are nervous and don't like to be out in the open.

I haven't seen territoriality in mine. They sometimes squabble, but it never gets serious. Sometimes they like to be apart from each other, but they always sleep together. I think Robos are very different to other dwarfs.

Cage accessories I would recommend:

Silent spinner wheel - hours of entertainment for human and hamsters!

Mouse - sized drinking bottle. They can't operate the valves in the big ones, also they drink very little.

Glass jar for use as a toilet. Get a square one so it doesn't roll.

Dish of sand. They like to dig and wash themselves in it. I hide pumpkin seeds in the sand for them to find.

Climbing ropes. Get thick natural ropes and hang them from the top of the cage. They will learn to climb them. Put a cocktail stick through the rope and stick raisins on it as a treat!
