What kind of hamster should i get2007-11-24 22:17:16

this will be my first hamster

i want one that doesnt smell very badly

and i want one i can hold a lot

and also where can i get one

Get a black bear hamster if you can find them. They always have the best temperments. They are soooo nice and funny to watch. They are the only hamster that I have seen not eat each other. Make sure that whatever hamster you get that you hold him alot before you buy him and make sure not to squeeze them too tight and hold them VERY CLOSE TO THE GROUND. just incase they decide they would like to jump. get everything you need for the hamster and set it up first that way your hammy wont be waiting in a box for an hour while you put his cage together. Most major petstores sell them and most smaller ones for a matter of fact. Just go to your phone book and look under 'Petstores' and you will see all the listings. If you dont want it to smell badly put some baking soda under the bedding that way it will absorb the odors. Good Luck!

The only hamsters I've ever had were Teddy Bear hamsters. They're great pets for a first time hamster owner... and children. Teddy Bear hamsters do not normally bite (unless you do something to hurt them badly). I've had 6 before and I was only bitten by one of them. They're fluffy and cute, and they're the nicest. My best friend works at PetSmart.. they have them there. I live in PA and Teddy Bear hamsters are sold in most pet shops around here. As for the smell issue, it's not the hamster you need to worry about... it's the bedding you buy. Try something biodegradable instead of a wood bedding. Cedar bedding smells especially bad.
