What kind of hamsters can I buy in sets of two2007-11-24 22:17:17

Ok well in a couple weeks my best friend and I are going to buy a hamster, each one of us are getting one. The hamsters would be perferibly male and female and live in the same cage at my house are there any species that could live in the vame cage without fighting?

Hamsters are definitely a good pet for you and your friend!! Dwarf hamsters can be good in pairs, but sometimes they do end up killing each other. You need to give them each enough food, so they won't fight each other!

If you're getting both a male and female, you're looking at almost or even more than 8 babies a month!! Also, make sure you remove the male, because the father has been known to sometimes eat the babies before they are weaned. Also, after they are weaned, you might need to seperate the babies from their parents after they've been weaned, so they can grow up on their own.

If this is too much, I would recommend getting either a pair of males or a pair of females. Something you should keep in your mind when you're buying them. Males are more friendly than females. But, females are more active than males, but less friendly. Having friendly hamsters are good, but also having more active hamsters is more fun raising/watching/playing with.

If you have a male and female in the same cage they won't fight but every 3 weeks you can look forward to lots of babies.

I used to have 2 little russian dwarf hamsters - they are brown with a white or black stripe down their backs. Gorgeous wee things and they didn't fight from what I remember...perhaps they were both female :)

Any hamsters of opposite sex will live together, but they will have babies lots of babies and then you have to have another cage to put the male in or he will kill the babies. If you are going to do this make sure you have a store in mind that will take all the baby hamsters. Your better off keeping them in two cages than dealing with all the offspring that they will have.

Roberovski hamsters are very sociable. But try to get two females! I used to have two males and this doesnt work very well! DO NOT GET A Male and female they will have TONS of babies.You will not beable to cope.
