What kind of rat should i buy male or female2007-11-24 22:17:45

-Lisa S.'s daughter

I have had 3 rats i got all males the females sometimes get lumps the males have larger butts but the females will not live as long if they get sick.
Both are nice for different reasons. I like the females because they're more active and playful. But whatever you decide, get two or more of the same gender because they need social interaction.

P.S. The "lumps" females get on their mammary glands are benign tumors that I actually just found out are caused (or exacerbated) by not having a period of complete darkness every night. If you expose them to a normal (12:12) light cycle there is less chance of this happening.

We have 3 females and they are a blast. They don't smell at all and we have potty trained 2 of them, really helps with keeping cage odor away. One female is on the go as soon as we get her out but another one would rather just sit. None of them has pooped outside their cage but if left out to long they do pee. I have heard that males pee all over but I can't speak for males because we have only owned females.
FEMALES.

Did you know that some female rats can naturaly smell like flowers or even GRAPE SODA. I have 2 rats (scarlet and isabella) and they both smell like grape soda.

If you need any info on rats www.ratclub.org has just about everything you could possably want to know about rats.
