More relaxed, more friendly
Male Cons:
They dribble urine
Female Pros:
More energetic, don't dribble
Female Cons:
Not as friendly
We raise fancy rats and have found both the males and females to be very friendly and sociable. They like company, so consider getting a pair (not necessarily a breeding pair), so one doesn't get lonesome. We handle our rats daily, except for the does with brand new litters-we give them a bit on their own to become acclimated to the babies, and all of our rats (adults and juveniles), are very friendly and easily handled.
While I won't go into picking a side or giving you the pro's and cons of each gender, I'll simply tell you what you can expect from the different genders.
Now I'm the proud owner of three rats, all of which are female.
Males tend to be more laid back, but you have to bathe them constantly or they'll get a yellowish crust on their skin that can mix with their fur.
Females are more hyper and are more easy to group together, plus you don't have to bathe them as often, but will bite and lick you from time to time.
If you already have one type of gender, keep getting that type unless you want little baby rats or have different cages. It's all up to you and what you're really looking for in a rat.
